My humble 200 word offering to the great Blank Noise project

Can you guess who I am?

I dress modestly. I don’t wear flashy make up.

I am not the kind of a lady one would mistake for a call girl or prostitute.

Yet, when I step out of my home, male eyes follow my every move – I often get asked "How much?"

I can feel that no matter what I am wearing, many of these eyes see me as though I was wearing nothing.

As I move about on the streets, the stares turn to whistles, thrusting pelvic moves in a queue, groping hands in a crowded bus.

I am not a caged canary but a human who has to step outside the four walls of her home – for meeting my neighbours, for buying my daily needs, for fresh air.

Yet, it is never easy.

Have you guessed who I am? Have you seen me on the street?

You must have.

I am the mother who bore you. The sister you feel duty-bound to ‘protect’. The girl you fell in love with.

I am the daughter you are one day going to have.

Will you let me be treated this way forever?

Or will you do something about it, today?

(A second offering, this time of 200 words, by Farrukh Naeem, dedicated to the blanknoiseproject.blogspot.com. The first 100-word offering is the post below...)

Well captured. Its amazing how different people talking about the same thing express it in different ways.

Farrukh there is a profound message in your writing that I hope inshallah men of all ages and places open up to.

However, on a constructive note, perhaps because unfortunately dresscode and appearence have been so heavily debated among muslims atleast in the west; saying one dresses modestly and wears no makeup therefor one should not be mistaken for a prostitute somehow also says that "if you should wear make up it would be understandable that you were mistaken for a prostitute".

I am not saying you mean that, it was just a thought that came to mind. Perhaps I am being too literal or simplistic in the way I read what you wrote. Pardon me if I am.

Perhaps I have been "corrupted" (lol) by the ongoing debates over here however nevertheless, your writing is very powerful and appreciated.

Generally speaking, I guess it is all about installing a basic idea in men at a young age, of women's worth, beyond objects of pleasure designed to please.

Oh and check out my blog, I think you will like my latest post :)

Farrukh that was so beautiful.. heartfelt and gutwrenching.

Incidentally have you heard the lovely 'nazm' by sahirludhianvi..'Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko..mardon ne unhe bazar diya..' it reminded me of that

Firstly, it is very well written Farrukh...having never been subject to harassment myself and because I am a guy, I was always blissfully unaware of all this...to me it was just something that occasionally happens to girls...thanks to Blank Noise and posts like these, I am more aware and more willing to take a stand now.

Interesting post! Thanks for visiting my blog... I am afraid I don't have any leads with regards to English books on ‘asbab-an-nuzul’. If you do find any (yes! esp tafseer Jalalayn!) please do let me know.
